How to Understand an NfL Blood Test Result
An NfL result reports the concentration of Neurofilament Light Chain in your blood. A higher value can be associated with more nerve-cell injury, but the number does not identify the cause, diagnose a disease, or show what should happen next by itself. Interpretation requires the laboratory’s own reference information and your broader clinical context.

What an Elevated NfL Result Can—and Cannot—Mean
NfL is a structural protein found in nerve cells. When axons are injured, more NfL can reach cerebrospinal fluid and blood. An elevated blood result can therefore be a signal of neuro-axonal injury, but it is a non-specific signal.

A Result Within the Reference Range Is Not a Rule-Out Test
A value that is not flagged by the laboratory may be useful context, but it does not prove that nothing is wrong. No single blood biomarker captures every neurological process, at every stage, in every person.
