What the NfL blood test measures
Neurofilament Light Chain (NfL) is a structural protein found inside nerve cells. When nerve cells are injured, some of that protein can enter the bloodstream, where it can be measured. This test reports the concentration of NfL in your blood sample.
In plain English: it gives you one objective data point about nerve-cell injury markers — a number you and a qualified healthcare provider can discuss alongside everything else known about your health. It is not a diagnosis and it does not identify a cause on its own.
